As your child gets ready to leave for college or university this fall, there’s a lot to think about—from tuition and textbooks to housing, transportation, and everything they’ll be taking with them.

Insurance might not be at the top of your back-to-school checklist, but it’s worth taking a few minutes to understand how your existing coverage may protect your student while they’re away from home.

Whether your child is staying in a university residence, renting an apartment, or sharing a house with roommates, their living arrangements can affect their insurance needs.

Does Your Home Insurance Cover Your Child’s Belongings at School?

In many situations, your child’s personal belongings may continue to be covered under your home insurance policy while they are away attending college or university.

If your child is a full-time student and their primary residence remains your home, coverage may extend to their belongings while they are living away at school. This could include items such as:

  • Clothing
  • Laptop and other electronics
  • Furniture
  • School supplies
  • Sports equipment
  • Other personal belongings

However, coverage is subject to the specific terms, conditions, limits, and exclusions of your policy.

Every insurance policy is different, so it’s important to check with your insurance broker before your child leaves. Factors such as their student status, living arrangements, financial dependency, and where they consider their primary residence can affect whether coverage applies.

If your child has established their own primary residence or no longer qualifies as a dependent student, they may need their own tenants insurance.

What If Your Student Is Renting?

If your child is renting an apartment, house, or other accommodation while attending school, tenants insurance can provide important protection.

While tenants insurance isn’t mandatory, a landlord may require a tenant to have insurance as a condition of the lease.

A tenants policy can typically provide coverage for:

Personal Belongings

Coverage for your student’s personal property, such as clothing, electronics, furniture, and other belongings, following a covered loss.

Personal Liability

Liability coverage can help protect your student if they are legally responsible for bodily injury to another person or damage to someone else’s property.

Additional Living Expenses

If the rental becomes uninhabitable following a covered loss, coverage may help with additional living expenses while repairs are being completed, subject to the policy terms and limits.

Damage to the Rental Property

Depending on the policy, coverage may apply to certain accidental damage your student causes to the rental property.

If your student owns higher-value items—such as musical instruments, collectibles, artwork, specialized sports equipment, or other valuables—it’s a good idea to discuss them with your broker. Additional coverage or higher limits may be appropriate.

What About Belongings Away From Their Residence?

Your student’s belongings won’t always stay in their dorm room or apartment. They may take their laptop to class, leave a bicycle on campus, bring sports equipment to practice, or travel back home during school breaks.

Personal property coverage can sometimes extend beyond the student’s residence, but specific limits and exclusions may apply.

Before your student leaves, review their coverage and make sure you understand how their belongings are protected when they’re away from their residence.

What If Your Student Has Roommates?

Sharing a rental can be a great way for students to manage their housing costs, but it can also create questions about insurance.

One student’s insurance policy does not automatically mean every roommate is covered.

Generally, your student’s policy is intended to protect their own belongings and liability. Roommates should speak with an insurance professional about their own individual coverage needs.

It’s also a good idea to clarify with the landlord and roommates who is responsible for what before signing a lease.

What About Students Living in Residence?

Students living in a university or college residence can have different insurance considerations than those renting an apartment or house.

Depending on the circumstances and the terms of your home insurance policy, your student’s belongings may continue to be covered while they’re living in residence.

However, limits, conditions, and exclusions can vary.

Don’t Forget About Car Insurance

If your child is taking a vehicle with them when they leave for school or will continue driving a family vehicle while they’re away, be sure to let your insurance broker know.

Where the vehicle is primarily kept and how it is being used can affect your auto insurance policy.

If your student is leaving the vehicle at home and only drives it when they return for holidays or school breaks, they may be able to remain listed as an occasional driver. However, this depends on the circumstances and your insurer’s rules.

Some insurers may also offer discounts for students who live away from home and don’t regularly have access to a vehicle.

If your student is taking a vehicle with them to school, your broker should be informed before they leave PEI.

A Quick Insurance Check

Moving away for school is a major change for your family, and it’s a good time to review your insurance coverage. Before your student heads off, consider discussing:

  • Where your student will be living.
  • Whether they’ll be living in residence or renting.
  • What belongings they’re taking with them.
  • Whether they own any high-value items.
  • Whether they’ll have access to or take a vehicle.
  • How often they expect to return home.
  • Whether they’ll have roommates.
  • Whether their current coverage continues to apply while they’re away.

A quick conversation with your broker can help you understand how your existing coverage applies and whether additional insurance is recommended.
